Participated in freedom struggle at the age of 16 years on the inspiration of Mahatma Gandhi and Sheikh Mohd. Abdullah; was jailed twice during 1946-47; actively worked with the leader of National Conference in 1947 when Pakistan invaded Kashmir and was consequently given the status of freedom fighter; guided army in fighting the invaders during 1965 Pakistan invasion, also helped Indian Army when Pakistani troops entered Gulmerg area of District Baramulla in 1977, during the last 7 years of militancy in Jammu and Kashmir; did not leave the valley and educated people to fight against militancy and not to harm the properties of those who migrated from the valley; took public procession from Uri to Quazigund alongwith the Congress leaders against the militancy and for peace process in 1996; Voluntarily offered his candidature on Cong (I) ticket from Srinagar City Lok Sabha constituency, the much disturbed area during the militancy.
